How to Word a Wedding Invitation (With Examples)

Not sure what to write on your wedding invitation? This guide covers wording for traditional, modern, and destination weddings — with ready-to-use examples.

The words on your wedding invitation set the tone for the entire day. Too formal and it feels cold; too casual and guests don't know what to wear or expect. Here's how to find the right balance.

The classic structure

Most wedding invitations follow the same hierarchy, regardless of style: host line → invitation line → couple's names → date and time → venue → RSVP details.

Host line — who is inviting?

Traditionally, the bride's parents host. Today, both families often co-host, or the couple hosts their own wedding. Common phrasings:

  • Together with their families, Zara Ahmed and Zain Khan…
  • Mr. and Mrs. Rajiv Faisal request the pleasure of your company…
  • The families of Zara Ahmed and Zain Khan invite you…

Invitation line — the verb matters

  • "request the honour of your presence" — very formal, typically for religious ceremonies
  • "request the pleasure of your company" — formal but warm
  • "invite you to celebrate with them" — relaxed and modern
  • "joyfully invite you" — personal and expressive

Date and time

Spell out numbers in formal invitations: 'Saturday, the twenty-first of November, two thousand and twenty-six, at half past six in the evening.' For digital invitations, numerals ('Saturday, 21 November 2026 at 6:30 pm') are perfectly acceptable and easier to read on a phone screen.

What to avoid

  • Mixing formal and casual tones in the same sentence
  • Listing the dress code in the invitation line (add it to individual events instead)
  • "No gifts please" — most guests ignore it and it reads awkwardly
  • Overcrowding the invitation with too many details — save logistics for a separate events section
